peri231 asked: How's my favorite artist? And now that I broke the communicational wall, here comes my question: Have you been doing much drawing before this comic, And if so, what kind of art did you do? And do you have any other comics for me (and others) to read, and get inspired from?
Lots of art! It was a whole variety, pre-2014 it was mostly MLP, but after I lost interest in the show it was just a variety of fan art of shows/movies/games that interested me :/
I also practiced with portrait and realistic art and was experimenting with various styles
Here’s a brief summary! (the art can be found on my other DA account)
As for comic stuff? This is the only comic series I’ve done!
Aside from one-off MLP comics I’ve done, this is the only full comic series I’m putting full dedication to :3
A recently widowed mother, a mouse named Mrs. Brisby, must save her young son from dying from pneumonia. Living next to a farmhouse, she and her family faces great danger from tractors and the humans and their cat potentially harming her family, and realizes she must move her entire house away to a safer location, because simply moving the family would endanger her young son’s life, as the cold air would kill him.
Going great lengths to find out how she can move her house, she runs into other animals for help, and other rats who may help her- or even endanger her, while she learns more about her husband and what NIMH is…
The first animated feature film directed by Don Bluth, this one’s a classic, based off the 1971 book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.
From the main character, to the soundtrack, the art style and animation, it’s a very unique family film, a much more mature family film.
Brisby is my all time favorite character, even though she is frightened of what she faces, she continues to go forward knowing that she’d probably perish trying to protect her family, a different type of strong character, she’s also just the sweetest and has a very soothing voice that can easily comfort <3
The tone and atmosphere of the whole film feels lighthearted and whimsical in some moments, but also feels epic and brooding at other times, and the inclusion of seemingly spiritual and mystical qualities makes it much more intriguing and opens a whole possibility of fan theories, analysis and speculation into the film.
The film’s soundtrack is also stellar, done by the legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith (who also did the soundtrack to Alien, Poltergeist, and Rudy) and helps cement and formulate the eerie and even lively tone of the film’s scenes.
This is one I’d highly recommend, not only is it a family film that can be looked at not only as a good mature story, but can be fully analyzed for what the film’s themes and motifs mean. It was the one film that really helped me get into writing and comics and Brisby is the one character who has had a huge impact on the characters I write, definitely check it out <3
The film is on DVD/Blu-Ray, and is sometimes on Netflix! (not at the time of this posting though)
A young girl, who met a prince when she was very young, was given a ring by him so that they may meet again one day. The girl was so impressed by him that she decided to try and be a prince herself, one day.
The girl, Utena Tenjou then attends Othori Academy, in masculine prince-inspired attire and and still carrying the prince’s ring, and meets a quiet and strange girl named Anthy Himemiya, who is getting bullied and abused by other students. Seeing this, Utena then challenges the opposing students to a series of duels to protect Anthy, who is also known as the “rose bride”while there are talks about a mysterious power to “revolutionize the world"…
With it’s excellent character design, breaking down barriers of gender roles and human sexuality, a great and diverse soundtrack, with some stunning visuals and iconography, Utena wasn’t anything I expected, but that was a good thing. It kept me intrigued and I really had no idea where the show would go, making me want to watch more.
Utena is very much a strange show with many quirky and comedic moments that make it stand out, while also having mature romantic and psychological themes which helps make it a show that is not overtly dramatic, but also not putting comedic moments in inappropriate areas either.
The show is also a wonderful re-imagining/deconstruction of the magical girl genre, placing it in a fairy-tale inspired setting with the usual tropes of transformation, magic, and feminine roles warped and with psychological themes discussed in the show as well. It really is a show that you have to really pay close attention to though as the story progresses.
I really loved the artwork, the imagery, and the relationship between Utena and Anthy, and some of that inspired the comic’s artwork and some of the characters as well, but more on art ^w^ .
The Adolescence of Utena movie has left fans mixed, but I personally loved it.
Important things to note for the movie! This is a completely alternate retelling to the series, and resolves around a specific theme that is told almost entirely by symbolism, but even though this is an alternate retelling, it is still good to watch the show first before the movie, if you are interested in it.
That’s all I have to say, hope this was interesting :3
Entire series is on YOUTUBE and HULU, and the movie is on HULU as well.
Anonymous asked: Got any practicing tips? Got a friends that been drawing for a while but went into a depressive slump for a long white and stopped drawing. They are drawing again but feel like they aren't getting any better and seems about ready to give up again.
Hmmm, well generally speaking for any form of art, one thing I think helps me the most is to look back at the artwork I like and inspires me, they should ask themselves what art styles do they like? What pictures do they want to replicate in style and quality?
So what I do, is that I look at artwork or art styles I ADORE and love so much, that I actually take physical notes on how they specifically did their art so I can try and replicate it, so I’ll bring up some quick examples:
(From ‘Adolescence of Utena’) DRAWING STYLE:
So the artist draws these characters with large, beady, but very detailed eyes.
There is no actual pupil in her eyes, but the shading in the top part of her iris creates the illusion of one existing.
Her mouth isn’t made up of one continuous line, but if you look closely, it’s made up of three separate spaced lines drawn in a way to create the look of a lip.
The nose is low and very close to the mouth, the neck is thin, and the hair is relatively straight, but slightly wavy with a few strands hanging out.
Now, another picture, (From Pixiv [SOURCE]) COLORING/PAINTING STYLE:
The whole color palette is uses many colors, but the colors themselves are not very bright or colorful, leaning towards more grey tones.
Completely white background suggests bright lighting behind our subjects, I can see this when I look at their hair and the brighter it gets when it faces the background.
I noticed that there’s really little shading at all, or at least hard, contrasting shading.
There’s also little contrast in any shading that is made, making a soft-looking image.
Actually little detail when it comes to the bodies and faces, most of that goes towards the hair, and any significant detail made on their bodies goes to the light shading when it comes to Madoka’s (pink haired girl) shirt
I could go on, but hat’s what helps me when I’m composing an image, and I can use this for manga, physical sculptures, or any type of painting, and I can apply this to whatever I’m working on.
Also another thing, a cartoonist I admire, Arin Hanson (hello Game Grumps fans :v) talked about the ‘Don’t break the chain’ technique, basically what you do is just draw everyday, don’t break that chain.
It doesn’t have to be a detailed super great drawing, but you just have to draw something every day, smiley face, flower, sun, landscape, anything, and that will hopefully create an incentive where you won’t quit.
This helps me, and I really hope it helps your friends too ^^
Also to help increase confidence in your art, here’s how I drew Lamb 3 years ago:
And here Is how I drew them 3 years later:
So there’s always a possibility for great improvement! 3 years a go I couldn’t have ever drawn something like that o.o And sometimes it can come a little quicker than expected, but never focus on expecting progress, just focus on making your work better to the way you like it! :3
